The NSW government has announced the design of the first Hydrogen Centre of Excellence in New South Wales, aimed at training plumbers and gas fitters for the renewable energy industry. With a $25 million investment, the centre plans to upskill 8250 workers in its initial five-year operation. This initiative addresses the skills gap needed to support the transition to clean technologies. The training center, a collaboration with the Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC), will offer practical training on hydrogen equipment and safety protocols. The spacious workshops and classrooms will provide apprentices with hands-on experience alongside traditional plumbing skills. Scheduled to be operational by 2027, the facility will create job opportunities, with over 100 apprentices involved in its construction. NSW Premier Chris Minns highlighted the project's importance in creating secure local jobs and attracting investment to the state. Minister Penny Sharpe emphasized the role of skilled workers in advancing NSW's clean energy goals. The collaboration between government, industry, and unions aims to develop a workforce ready for the state's economic growth and sustainability objectives. PICAC Chief Executive Shayne La Combre emphasized the significance of industry collaboration in preparing workers for emerging fields like hydrogen, underlining the critical role of skilled professionals in shaping NSW's economic future.
