Western Australia is set to become the location of Australia's pioneering clean energy training centre, following a significant $70.5 million investment by the state and federal governments over the next five years. The TAFE Clean Energy Skills National Centre of Excellence will be established to combat labor shortages and facilitate the country's shift towards renewable energy. The center, to be spread across metropolitan and regional TAFE campuses, will provide training in a range of clean energy technologies, including solar, wind, hydrogen, batteries, and grid integration, essential for meeting the rising demand in the sector. With the target of adding 200,000 individuals to clean economy jobs by 2030, including 32,000 electricians, the investment underscores the urgency of developing a skilled workforce for the evolving clean energy landscape. Federal Minister Brendan O’Connor highlighted the significance of nurturing clean energy skills for the net zero transition and Australia's future. WA Training Minister Simone McGurk stressed the importance of industry-driven training programs and partnerships with universities to empower students with practical skills and knowledge for the clean energy sector. By collaborating with TAFEs in other states and forging alliances with universities, employers, and unions, the centre aims to elevate the clean energy skills base nationwide.
