Avina Clean Hydrogen marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of their landmark green hydrogen facility in Vernon, California, close to the Port of Long Beach. The project, aligned with the goal of decarbonizing heavy-duty transportation and contributing to California's clean energy objectives, will produce up to 4 MTPD of compressed green hydrogen through electrolysis. This process, utilizing clean electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, is expected to significantly reduce emissions, cutting around 130,000 metric tons of CO2 annually and improving air quality in the vicinity. Vishal Shah, the Founder and CEO of Avina Clean Hydrogen, highlighted the strategic location of the facility, enabling the company to meet the increasing demand for clean hydrogen in the region. Mayor Judith Merlo of Vernon expressed strong support for the project, emphasizing the city's role in facilitating the permitting process and ensuring reliable power supply through collaboration with the local utility, VPU. Partners like Dan McGill of FASTECH emphasized the importance of collaboration in developing reliable hydrogen generation and distribution facilities in Southern California. The project has received praise from Katrina Fritz, CEO of the California Hydrogen Business Council, who sees Avina's facility as crucial in meeting the rising hydrogen demand, particularly for zero-emission transport and distributed power generation. With construction set to begin following the acquisition of all environmental permits, the facility is expected to commence commercial operations by July 2025.
