Ballard Power Systems to Supply Canadian Pacific Kansas City with Fuel Cell Engines
Key Ideas
- Ballard Power Systems signs long-term deal to provide nearly 100 fuel cell engines to Canadian Pacific Kansas City for North American freight rail market.
- Engines total about 20 megawatts of fuel cell power, supporting CPKC's hydrogen locomotive program expansion.
- Deal follows a previous partnership starting in 2021 where Ballard provided 10 megawatts of fuel cell engines.
- CPKC currently operates three hydrogen locomotives in its operations.
Ballard Power Systems, a Canadian hydrogen fuel cell maker, has secured a long-term agreement with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) to supply almost 100 fuel cell engines for use in the North American freight rail market. These engines, each with a power capacity of 200 kilowatts, will collectively deliver around 20 megawatts of fuel cell power to CPKC by 2025. This new deal expands on the existing partnership established in 2021 when Ballard initially provided CPKC with 10 megawatts of fuel cell engines. The fuel cell engines procured from Ballard will specifically aid in CPKC's hydrogen locomotive program, which is currently operational with three hydrogen locomotives. The collaboration aims to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of CPKC's operations in the freight rail sector.
