Detroit has been awarded a $30.8 million federal grant to further its transition to clean energy buses, including the purchase of 21 new hybrid buses and 4 hydrogen fuel-cell coaches. The initiative is part of the city's efforts to enhance public transportation and air quality. These new coaches are intended to replace aging diesel buses, with the ultimate goal of operating only zero-emission buses in the future. The grant, which is part of President Joe Biden's Infrastructure Law, marks the initial funding announcement among 117 public transportation improvement projects across 47 states. An additional $5 million in match funding from the Michigan Department of Transportation will boost the total investment to nearly $36 million. Detroit aims to evaluate different technologies, such as hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell buses, to determine the most suitable options for Michigan's climate and to advance towards zero-emissions transportation. The funding will also support workforce development for operators and mechanics to adapt to new equipment, as well as the installation of charging and refueling infrastructure. Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted the significance of the grant in improving bus services and addressing community needs. The investment is expected to replace a significant portion of the city's bus fleet in the next two years, enabling the expansion of bus services for Detroit residents.
