The government of Hong Kong unveiled its hydrogen development strategy aimed at combating climate change and attaining carbon neutrality by 2050. At a ceremony, officials revealed plans for 14 trial projects involving the use of hydrogen in activities like street cleaning and electricity provision. Environment Secretary Tse Chin-wan emphasized the significance of this strategy in building a carbon-free city, citing hydrogen as a crucial zero-carbon energy source for facilitating the green transition. Tse expressed optimism about hydrogen's potential to drive a new green economy in Hong Kong, emphasizing its production, storage, and application across various sectors as catalysts for job creation and industry growth. Additionally, legislative amendments are slated for the first half of the following year to ensure safe handling of the highly combustible gas. Hong Kong already boasts a hydrogen double-decker bus, with plans for the MTR to introduce a hydrogen-powered light rail vehicle later in the year, underscoring the city's commitment to embracing hydrogen as a clean energy solution.
