In Daejeon, South Korea, the production of hydrogen trams for the city's Urban Railroad Line 2 has commenced, signaling a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility. Hyundai Rotem, the manufacturer, aims to deliver a total of 34 hydrogen trams by the first half of 2028, with a production cost of 293.4 billion won. The hydrogen tram boasts impressive features such as the ability to travel more than 200km on a single charge, contributing to improved air quality by purifying fine dust during its operation. Equipped with advanced technologies like OLEDs and LTO batteries, the tram prioritizes safety with features like forward collision warning and automatic braking systems. The hydrogen required for the tram's operation will be obtained by refining methane gas from food waste, aligning with Daejeon City's commitment to sustainable practices. The city plans to establish production facilities to secure hydrogen fuel before the official opening of Line 2. Daejeon Metropolitan Government has emphasized the tram's development with domestic technology, having completed extensive demonstrations and R&D projects to ensure performance and safety. Daejeon Metropolitan Railway Line 2, with a total project cost of 1.4782 trillion won, is set to have 45 stations along a 38.8km route. The project includes a design contest for stations, with construction scheduled to begin in October. Mayor Lee Jang-woo expressed pride in introducing the hydrogen tram, emphasizing its significance for Daejeon's identity as a science city.
