Foton Mobility, a leading transport firm, has highlighted the significance of hydrogen trucks in overhauling Australia's carbon emissions, particularly for long-haul transport. Executives from Foton Mobility emphasized the essential role heavy-duty hydrogen trucks will play in addressing Australia's emissions, given the vast distances that need to be covered. While the company plans to deploy hydrogen-powered buses in two states, they also acknowledge the importance of electric trucks for shorter deliveries. Neil Wang, Foton Mobility Distribution chief executive, emphasized the crucial advantage of hydrogen trucks in terms of quick refueling times and long driving distances, essential for journeys like Sydney to Brisbane or Melbourne. The company has already initiated a trial with hydrogen buses in South Australia and delivered some to Tasmania. Other companies, including Woolworths, are also investing in electric trucks from Foton Mobility. However, the transition to low-emission trucks may require government subsidies due to higher costs, alongside necessary regulatory changes for widespread adoption. The industry is pushing for adjustments in weight restrictions to ensure the trucks can access all parts of the country, with some progress seen at federal and state levels. The focus on low-emission heavy-duty trucks has also been a topic of discussion in recent inquiries, with businesses eager to embrace the technology but requiring financial and regulatory support to facilitate the transition.
