NTPC and Indian Army Collaboration to Establish Solar Hydrogen Microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh
Key Ideas
  • NTPC and the Indian Army partner to create a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid in Ladakh, providing stable power supply in off-grid locations using Green Hydrogen.
  • The innovative system aims to replace diesel generators, offering advantages like renewable energy integration, reduced carbon emissions, and consistent power supply in extreme conditions.
  • The project will enhance self-sufficiency, decarbonise the defence sector, and promote green energy in remote areas, setting a new standard for sustainable energy systems.
  • NTPC's broader commitment to renewable energy includes targets like achieving 60GW capacity by 2032, emphasizing green hydrogen technology, carbon neutrality, and various decarbonisation initiatives.
NTPC has collaborated with the Indian Army to establish a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh. This initiative aims to provide a stable power supply using Green Hydrogen in off-grid Army locations. The project was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh through a virtual ceremony, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in challenging terrains. The innovative microgrid system, designed by NTPC, will operate independently and supply 200kW of power round-the-clock throughout the year, replacing diesel gensets at off-grid Army locations. This transition will ensure a sustainable power supply even in harsh winter conditions, where temperatures can drop to -30°C at an altitude of 4,400 meters. NTPC plans to maintain the project for 25 years, supporting Indian soldiers stationed in strategically important but tough terrains. The Solar-Hydrogen microgrid system offers various advantages such as renewable energy integration, stable power supply under adverse conditions, reduced carbon emissions, and the promotion of a cleaner and sustainable energy ecosystem. By leveraging Ladakh’s solar irradiance and low temperatures, this project will enable the production and utilization of green energy, reducing reliance on fuel logistics and enhancing self-sufficiency in remote areas. Moreover, NTPC's commitment to renewable energy includes initiatives like hydrogen blending, carbon capture, electric buses, and smart townships, highlighting the company's dedication to decarbonisation and green technology in the energy sector.
