ONGC Plans Green Hydrogen Plant in Mangaluru for MRPL Requirement
Key Ideas
  • ONGC is conducting a pre-feasibility study for a green hydrogen plant in Mangaluru to cater to the needs of MRPL.
  • The move is in line with ONGC's goal to achieve net zero status by 2038 through various green initiatives.
  • Green hydrogen production is highlighted as a way to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions compared to grey hydrogen.
  • NHAI has no immediate plans to establish an office in Udupi, with current operations managed through offices in Mangaluru and Honnavar.
The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) is exploring the possibility of setting up a green hydrogen plant in Mangaluru to meet the captive demand of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL). This initiative is part of ONGC's commitment to achieving net zero status by 2038 and aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission's objectives. The production of green hydrogen is emphasized for its potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions significantly. Meanwhile, the development of a plastic park in Mangaluru, with a total project cost of ₹62.78 crore and a Central grant of ₹31.38 crore, is progressing. In a separate update, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has clarified that there are no immediate plans to establish an office in Udupi, with current operations being managed through offices in Mangaluru and Honnavar. This reaffirms the infrastructure focus on NH-66 in the region.
