Senoko Energy and Gentari Sign MoU for Hydrogen Importation to Singapore
Key Ideas
- Senoko Energy and Gentari have signed an MoU to explore importing hydrogen gas from Malaysia to Singapore, aiming to enhance the efficiency and environmental performance of energy assets.
- The collaboration targets a significant reduction in carbon emissions, equivalent to taking thousands of cars off the roads annually, aligning with Singapore's Net Zero target for 2050.
- Senoko Energy's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and Gentari's focus on being a leading green molecules supplier in the region highlight the importance of hydrogen in decarbonizing various sectors.
- Both companies are actively involved in other initiatives to support low-carbon futures, with Senoko Energy exploring green electricity import and Gentari developing hydrogen projects in Malaysia and clean ammonia projects in India.
Senoko Energy and Gentari have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on importing hydrogen gas from Malaysia to Singapore. The aim is to integrate hydrogen into Senoko Energy's existing and new combined cycle gas turbine assets, enhancing their efficiency and environmental performance. The hydrogen supply will be provided by Gentari through a 20-year agreement expected to start in 2029.
The partnership seeks to reduce carbon emissions significantly, starting with 18,000 tCO2e annually in the initial phase, which is equivalent to removing 4,000 cars from the roads. This reduction could potentially increase to 535,000 tCO2e in subsequent phases, equivalent to 119,000 cars. This aligns with Singapore's 2050 Net Zero target.
Senoko Energy's President & CEO, Frederik Baerts, expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting hydrogen's potential in reducing carbon emissions and advancing the energy transition. Gentari's Chief Hydrogen Officer, Michèle Azalbert, emphasized the importance of hydrogen in decarbonizing various sectors and building a hydrogen backbone for Southeast Asia.
The collaboration reflects Senoko Energy's and Gentari's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and the development of the hydrogen economy. Senoko Energy is active in supporting Singapore's low-carbon future through various initiatives, including previous hydrogen exploration agreements and grid scale trading platforms for solar energy. Gentari is focused on developing clean energy projects in Malaysia, such as a hydrogen production hub, and clean ammonia projects in India.
Both companies are working towards a greener future, with Senoko Energy exploring green electricity import and installing new energy plants, while Gentari is engaged in hydrogen and clean ammonia production projects in Malaysia and India.
