South Korea has witnessed a substantial surge in the demand for hydrogen in its mobility sector, with consumption increasing by 59% in the first nine months of the year. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy reported that the country consumed 6,389 tons of hydrogen during this period, compared to 4,016 tons in the previous year. Deputy Minister for Energy Policy, Lee Ho-hyeon, highlighted the growing availability of hydrogen products in daily life due to the rising number of hydrogen buses. The government aims to ensure a stable hydrogen supply to support the hydrogen mobility industry and plans to monitor the market closely. The Korea Petroleum Quality & Distribution Authority will conduct inspections at hydrogen facilities nationwide for market stability. Additionally, three cities - Donghae, Samcheok, and Pohang - have been designated as the nation's first hydrogen-specialised complexes. These cities passed feasibility surveys and will receive support for developing into hydrogen industry hubs. The projects in Donghae-Samcheok and Pohang involve significant investments to establish hydrogen clusters and fuel cell generation facilities, respectively.
