Tata Motors Trials Hydrogen-Powered Trucks for Sustainable Mobility in India
Key Ideas
  • Tata Motors is conducting trials for hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks in India to support the country's net-zero emission goals by 2070.
  • The trials, supported by the Indian government's National Green Hydrogen Mission, aim to evaluate the viability of hydrogen-powered vehicles for long-distance haulage and develop the necessary infrastructure.
  • These advanced hydrogen-powered trucks will be deployed on major freight routes across cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and others, featuring innovative technologies for sustainability and safety.
  • In addition to the hydrogen trials, Tata Motors recently inaugurated a vehicle scrapping facility in Guwahati, emphasizing their commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices.
Tata Motors, a leading Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer, has initiated trials for hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks to support India's net-zero emission targets by 2070. The company received a tender from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to evaluate the use of hydrogen-powered vehicles for long-haul transportation. This trial phase, under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will span two years and involve 16 advanced hydrogen-powered trucks being tested on major freight routes including key Indian cities. The vehicles, featuring both Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) technologies, are designed for sustainability, cost-efficiency, and high performance, with operational ranges up to 500 kilometers. The trials aim to assess the effectiveness of hydrogen fuel in commercial transportation and contribute to the development of a green hydrogen infrastructure in India. Additionally, Tata Motors recently launched a vehicle scrapping facility in Guwahati, focusing on eco-friendly processes to dismantle end-of-life vehicles. These initiatives highlight Tata Motors' commitment to innovation, sustainability, and advancing India's sustainable transportation sector while reducing carbon emissions.
