Wiener Linien, the public transportation authority in Vienna, is making significant strides towards sustainable city transit by introducing innovative battery-hydrogen buses. Following a Europe-wide tender, Wiener Linien is set to acquire ten new minibuses from the Italian manufacturer Rampini, which combine hydrogen and electricity as power sources. These buses will replace existing electric buses on specific lines, offering enhanced flexibility and eliminating the need for constant recharging due to the hydrogen fuel cell technology that generates energy while the bus is in operation. The introduction of the Rampini Hydron Range Extender buses marks a new era in the minibus segment, allowing Wiener Linien to streamline its vehicle fleet and respond efficiently to changing timetables. The buses will be refueled and charged at an H2 filling station in Vienna, using locally produced green hydrogen. Wiener Linien's focus on climate-friendly propulsion extends beyond this purchase, with plans to introduce pure hydrogen buses in 2025 from the Portuguese manufacturer CaetanoBus.
