Australia has introduced the Future Made in Australia (Production Tax Credit and Other Measures) Bill 2024 to boost renewable hydrogen production and enhance Indigenous business participation. The bill, announced by Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen, offers a tax credit of A$2/kg for renewable hydrogen production from 2027-28 to 2039-40, providing clarity and incentives for investors in the sector. It aims to unlock private sector investment, strengthen the economy, and support industries vital for achieving climate goals. Operational projects producing hydrogen or critical minerals for green technology are eligible for tax credits, with specific requirements to be outlined by the Treasury. Additionally, Australia's Hydrogen Headstart program, valued at A$2 billion, is set to support renewable hydrogen initiatives. The country is already a prominent player in the sector, with around 180 renewable or low-carbon hydrogen projects underway. Despite varying global production costs, Australia's initiatives and projects showcase its potential for leading in renewable hydrogen development and building a resilient, sustainable economy.
