US President Joe Biden has unveiled a $3 billion investment plan to revamp and modernize ports in 27 states and territories. This initiative will target upgrading the infrastructure of 55 port sites across the country, with a significant portion allocated to the Port of Baltimore. The funding, part of Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, will primarily be used for implementing zero-emission port equipment, charging infrastructure, and power enhancements. The investment will cover various aspects such as battery-electric and hydrogen-powered port equipment, a fleet of 1,000 drayage trucks, 10 locomotives, and 20 vessels. Additionally, it will support the deployment of shore power systems for vessels, battery-electric and hydrogen vehicle charging/fueling infrastructure, and solar power generation. According to the White House, this program is anticipated to create approximately 40,000 jobs nationwide, with a focus on generating over 6,500 job opportunities in manufacturing. Moreover, it aims to achieve a substantial reduction of more than 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions within the first decade of implementation. This reduction is equivalent to the energy consumption of nearly 400,000 homes for a year, showcasing a significant step towards sustainability and environmental conservation.
