The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has announced $635 million in grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to enhance electric vehicle (EV) charging and alternative fueling infrastructure nationwide. These grants will support 49 projects deploying over 11,500 EV charging ports, as well as hydrogen and natural gas fueling infrastructure in 27 states, four Federally Recognized Tribes, and Washington, D.C. With a focus on achieving President Biden's target of 500,000 publicly available EV chargers by 2030, the country has already surpassed 206,000 chargers, showing significant progress in the clean energy sector. The Biden Administration's investments have not only doubled the number of publicly-accessible EV chargers since 2021 but have also incentivized industry investment, creating jobs and economic growth. The grants also prioritize expanding hydrogen refueling infrastructure to support the hydrogen economy, decrease carbon emissions, and improve air quality, particularly in areas heavily affected by diesel emissions. Furthermore, by allocating 67% of the funding to disadvantaged communities, the investments align with the Justice40 Initiative, aiming to provide equitable access to clean transportation options and mitigate the adverse impacts of air pollution on health and transportation costs.
