Namibia and China are aligning their efforts towards green transformation and energy independence. The Namibian ambassador to China highlighted the need for enhanced cooperation in key industries, particularly in new energy vehicles (NEVs) and hydrogen production. Namibia aims to reduce its heavy dependence on electricity imports and evolve as a regional hub for hydrogen production in southern Africa. Chinese companies are expected to play a vital role in these initiatives, with plans to establish local plants and supply chains for NEVs. Additionally, Namibia has welcomed Chinese investments in green energy projects like the construction of a large solar power plant, enhancing the country's power capacity and promoting environmental sustainability. The collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has strengthened bilateral ties between China and Namibia, leading to significant infrastructural developments such as road projects and improved connectivity. Both countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on BRI Cooperation in 2018, ushering in a new era of cooperation. Chinese investments in Namibia are set to expand across various sectors like oil and gas, green hydrogen, agriculture, education, and infrastructure. This partnership, characterized by mutual trust and long-term commitment, demonstrates China's support for Africa's development and Namibia's economic growth.
