Spanish network operator Enagás has announced its decision to invest €3.13bn into hydrogen by 2030, with the goal of making hydrogen its dominant energy asset, surpassing natural gas. This significant investment is part of Enagás' strategy to focus on green hydrogen infrastructure, aiming for it to be the main growth driver, accounting for 83% of the company's $4.03bn investment plan over the next six years. Enagás anticipates a 9.5% compound annual EBITDA growth between 2026 and 2030 as a result of this investment.
The company has completed the conceptual design of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone and is moving towards the final investment decision for the network, which includes underground storage facilities. Enagás also rebranded its subsidiary to Scale Green Energy, with a focus on various clean energy initiatives including green hydrogen for mobility. The company has already secured funding to develop hydrogen refueling stations as part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) corridors.
While Enagás is shifting its focus towards hydrogen, it acknowledges the continued importance of natural gas in managing peak electricity demands and integrating renewables. Spain, aiming to establish itself as a green hydrogen-producing leader in Europe, has initiated the hydrogen valley programme, with Enagás participating in 16 projects selected for funding to boost the production and consumption of green hydrogen.
