Groundbreaking Green Hydrogen Production Plant Using Plasma Oxy Gasification Technology
Key Ideas
- A demonstration plant will produce 1 tonne of green hydrogen per day by gasifying 25 tonnes of MSW/agri-waste using Plasma Oxy Gasification technology.
- The plant will globally stand out due to its plasma-assisted 'oxy gasification' process, producing very high-quality syn-gas for hydrogen separation.
- Besides green hydrogen, the process will also produce electricity using Carbon-Mono-Oxide separated from the Hydrogen Recovery System.
- Gasification & Reformation of MSW/Agri-Waste is highlighted as a less energy-intensive alternative to electrolysis for green hydrogen production.
NETRA, the R&D wing of NTPC Ltd., is setting up a groundbreaking green hydrogen production plant that will use Plasma Oxy Gasification technology to convert MSW/agri-waste into green hydrogen. This unique plant aims to produce 1 tonne of green hydrogen per day by gasifying 25 tonnes of waste material. The process involves plasma-assisted 'oxy gasification' to generate high-quality syn-gas, from which high-purity hydrogen (above 99.9%) will be separated using a novel gas membrane and pressure swing adsorption configuration. Additionally, the plant will utilize Carbon-Mono-Oxide separated from the Hydrogen Recovery System to generate electricity through a low-calorie gas engine. This technology is positioned as a less energy-intensive and innovative approach compared to the traditional electrolysis method for green hydrogen production. The initiative aligns with NETRA's focus on research and technology demonstration for achieving Energy Transition goals and NTPC's commitment to Circular Economy models. This project also introduces NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC, to the green hydrogen domain, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions.
