Hyundai Motor Group has revealed detailed plans to establish a waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) ecosystem in West Java, Indonesia, at the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit held in Jakarta. This initiative aims to convert organic waste into clean hydrogen to promote a circular hydrogen economy in the area. Hyundai will partner with the Indonesian government and Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned energy company, to execute this project. Additionally, collaborations with South Korean landfill developer Sejin E&E will focus on rehabilitating the Sarimukti landfill in West Java, emphasizing environmental risk mitigation. The biogas produced at the landfill will be transformed into hydrogen using technology provided by Hyundai Rotem. Discussions are underway with West Java authorities to develop the necessary infrastructure by the end of the year. By 2027, Hyundai plans to finalize the installation of hydrogen conversion systems and refueling stations on land allocated by Pertamina. Furthermore, Hyundai aims to expand its hydrogen technologies across the production, storage, and refueling chain through partnerships with institutions like the Korea Testing Certification Institute and the Institute of Advanced Engineering. This venture represents Hyundai's first international extension of its waste-to-hydrogen model, initially showcased at CES 2024.
