Mangaluru set to Become Hub for Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • MRPL in Mangaluru plans to produce 500 tonnes of Green Hydrogen annually by 2026, contributing to the city's identification as a green hydrogen cluster.
  • Investors show keen interest in Mangaluru due to its port facilities for exporting Green Hydrogen, with MRPL's initiative signaling progress in this direction.
  • Production of Green Hydrogen aligns with India's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2070, with refineries urged to transition from carbon-emitting methods to sustainable practices.
  • While green hydrogen production is more expensive than traditional methods, the government is pushing for its adoption to combat carbon emissions and drive the green energy transition.
In Mangaluru, plans have been finalized for the establishment of a Green Hydrogen production unit by MRPL, set to produce 500 tonnes annually by 2026. Green Hydrogen, produced through the electrolysis of water, is an essential component of the city's drive towards sustainability. MRPL has already initiated the process by inviting tenders for the electrolysis process and providing space for the outsourcing company within its premises. The interest in green hydrogen was evident at the 'Invest Karnataka 2022' conference in Bengaluru, where Mangaluru emerged as a favored destination for investors due to its port facilities enabling export opportunities. This move by MRPL is a significant stride towards reducing hydrocarbon usage and aligning with the global trend towards net zero emissions. While the current hydrogen production methods emit carbon, the shift towards Green Hydrogen aims to combat this issue. Although there are cost implications, the government is actively promoting green hydrogen production among major refineries to drive the country towards a sustainable, low-carbon future.
