Novelis Inc., a leading aluminium solutions provider, has successfully tested the use of hydrogen to power a recycling furnace at its plant in Latchford, Warrington, UK. The initiative, part of a UK government decarbonisation programme in collaboration with Progressive Energy, aimed to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to natural gas. Through safety-focused tests blending different hydrogen percentages with natural gas, the project emphasized the potential of hydrogen as a renewable energy source in the aluminium industry. The pilot project involved remelting hundreds of tons of scrap aluminium alloy, with downstream processing to assess the impact on product quality and environmental emissions. Novelis plans to share the findings as part of the UK government's Industrial Fuel Switching programme, promoting the decarbonisation of operations through low carbon hydrogen. Additionally, Novelis is investing in expanding its UBC recycling capacity in Latchford to decrease CO2 emissions significantly. The company also set ambitious sustainability targets for 2030, including increasing recycled content and reducing carbon emissions per ton of aluminium shipped, aligning with its vision for circularity and carbon neutrality by 2050.
