OMV Petrom, a leading energy producer in Southeast Europe, is making a substantial investment of around EUR 750 million at the Petrobrazi refinery in Romania. The investment will focus on converting the refinery into a key producer of sustainable fuels in the region, particularly sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), along with by-products like bio-naphtha and bio-LPG for the chemical industry. In a strategic move towards decarbonization, the company will also establish two green hydrogen facilities alongside the SAF/HVO facility. These green hydrogen units will play a crucial role in biofuel production, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions significantly compared to traditional fuels. OMV Petrom's commitment to sustainability and decarbonization is evident through the allocation of a total of EUR 11 billion by 2030 to reshape the company for a future with lower carbon emissions. The company aims to enhance product reliability and reduce carbon footprints for customers, ultimately becoming the preferred choice in the market. Additionally, OMV Petrom has secured funding from European funds, including the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (NPRR), for the green hydrogen units. The integration of green hydrogen into sustainable fuels like SAF and renewable diesel is expected to result in a substantial reduction of CO2 emissions. To ensure a sustainable supply chain, OMV Petrom has acquired a 50% interest in 'Respira Verde,' a company specializing in collecting discarded cooking oil from various sectors in Romania. This initiative aligns with the company's goal of producing biofuels domestically and reducing dependence on imports.
