OMV Petrom's EUR 750mn Investment to Make Petrobrazi a Leader in Sustainable Fuel Production
Key Ideas
  • OMV Petrom is investing EUR 750mn at Petrobrazi to become a major producer of sustainable fuels in Southeast Europe by building a SAF/HVO facility and two green hydrogen units.
  • The company's commitment to decarbonize transport in Romania includes EUR 11 billion investment by 2030 for a lower carbon future in the region.
  • The new SAF/HVO production facility will have a capacity of 250 kt/year, using bio-naphtha and bio-LPG by-products, with most of the required hydrogen supplied by the green hydrogen production units.
  • Green hydrogen production units with a capacity of 55 MW will enable the production of 8 kt of green hydrogen annually, integrating it into sustainable fuels to achieve a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional fuels.
OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe, has announced a significant investment of approximately EUR 750 million at its Petrobrazi refinery in Romania. The aim is to transform the refinery into the leading producer of sustainable fuels in the region. This transformation includes the construction of a SAF/HVO production facility and two green hydrogen units to be used in biofuel production. The company's CEO, Christina Verchere, highlighted the commitment to decarbonize transport by investing EUR 11 billion by 2030 for a lower carbon future. The investments also align with the goal of replacing imports with locally produced biofuels, ensuring product certainty and reducing carbon emissions. The SAF/HVO plant is designed to produce 250 kt/year of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, utilizing bio-naphtha and bio-LPG by-products. The facility's flexibility allows for product mix adjustments based on market demand and available feedstock. The green hydrogen units, supported by European funds, will have a capacity of 55 MW, producing around 8 kt of green hydrogen annually. Integration of green hydrogen into sustainable fuels is expected to result in a significant 70% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional fuels. Petrobrazi aims to lead in sustainable fuel production through the certification to produce SAF and HVO via biological raw material co-processing. Additionally, OMV Petrom has acquired a 50% stake in 'Respira Verde', a company specializing in collecting used cooking oil for biofuel production, ensuring a secure source of raw materials for biofuel production.
