OMV Petrom's Sustainable Fuel Transformation in Romania
Key Ideas
  • OMV Petrom plans a 750 million euro investment at its Petrobrazi site in Romania to become a leading producer of sustainable fuels, aligning with low-carbon energy goals.
  • The investment includes a state-of-the-art biofuels plant focusing on sustainable aviation fuels and renewable diesel, contributing to reducing CO2 emissions by at least 70% compared to conventional fuels.
  • Green hydrogen production units with a total capacity of 55 MW will be integrated into the process, with an annual production of 8,000 tonnes to further enhance the sustainability of biofuel production.
  • By securing a stake in a used edible oil collector and planning to produce 250,000 tonnes of sustainable biofuels locally from 2028, OMV Petrom aims to strengthen Romania's energy security and reduce import dependence.
OMV Petrom, a major player in Romania's energy sector, is accelerating its transformation towards sustainable energy with a significant investment of nearly 750 million euros at its Petrobrazi site. The company aims to establish the refinery as a prominent producer of sustainable fuels in the region by focusing on low-carbon energy initiatives. One of the key components of this investment is the construction of a state-of-the-art biofuels plant with a dedicated unit for sustainable aviation fuels and renewable diesel, costing 560 million euros. This facility will have an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes and will play a crucial role in adjusting production mix based on market demand and raw material availability. Additionally, the plant will generate bio-naphtha and bio-GPL for the chemical industry. Green hydrogen will also be at the core of the process, with two hydrogen production units set to be integrated, representing a total capacity of 55 MW. The renewable hydrogen produced will be utilized in the biofuel manufacturing process, leading to a significant reduction of at least 70% in CO2 emissions compared to traditional fuels. To ensure a sustainable supply chain, OMV Petrom has acquired a 50% stake in a leading used edible oil collector in Romania, ensuring a local source of biomass for production. The company plans to significantly reduce imports of petroleum products by locally producing 250,000 tonnes of sustainable biofuels from 2028, thereby enhancing energy security for Romania and the region. By aligning with European climate objectives and investing in low-carbon energy, OMV Petrom is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy practices and contributing to the local economy and energy sovereignty of Romania.
