Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Friesen Elektra Green Energy AG have inaugurated Project Anker, a green hydrogen production facility in Sande, Lower Saxony, Germany. The project, backed by CIP's Energy Transition Fund and Friesen Elektra, aims to have an initial electrolysis capacity of 400 MW, with plans to double it to 800 MW in the future. Positioned strategically near Wilhelmshaven and the German hydrogen core network, Project Anker is forecasted to generate 80,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, catering to industries such as steel and chemicals, along with the transport sector. By substituting fossil fuels with green hydrogen, the project could slash CO₂ emissions by up to 2.4 million tons per year, equivalent to the emissions of around 340,000 households. The venture is expected to uplift the regional economy in Lower Saxony by creating employment opportunities, driving economic growth, and involving the local community. Powered by renewable sources like offshore and onshore wind and solar energy, Project Anker signifies a significant step in Germany's journey towards a carbon-neutral future.
