Singapore's Green Energy Future: New Hydrogen-Ready Power Plant to Address Rising Energy Demand
Key Ideas
  • Singapore plans to build a hydrogen-ready Combined Cycle Gas Turbine generating unit to meet the increasing energy demand by 2030.
  • The facility, developed by PacificLight Power, will initially operate with 30% hydrogen and aims to transition to 100% hydrogen in the future.
  • The city-state's power system peak demand is expected to grow steadily, driven by sectors like advanced manufacturing and electrification of transportation.
  • The Energy Market Authority is leading Singapore's transition towards a low-carbon energy future to address the rising energy needs sustainably.
Singapore is set to build a new hydrogen-ready Combined Cycle Gas Turbine generating unit to cater to the escalating energy demand in the country. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) announced this initiative, stating the facility, slated to commence operations in 2029, will be developed by PacificLight Power. The unit, located on Jurong Island, will have an initial capacity of at least 600 megawatts and is designed to operate with 30% hydrogen initially, with future plans to transition to 100% hydrogen. The construction of this facility aligns with Singapore's strategic move towards a low-carbon energy future, as highlighted by Puah Kok Keong, EMA's chief executive. The city-state's energy requirements have been steadily increasing, primarily fueled by electricity-intensive sectors like advanced manufacturing and the digital economy. With a projected compound annual growth rate of 3.7% to 5.7% in power system peak demand over the next six years, Singapore aims to meet this demand sustainably through innovative solutions like hydrogen-ready power generation. In response to the growing energy needs, the EMA initiated a call for proposals for new generation capacity in June 2024. The selection of PacificLight Power from six proposals received signals a significant step towards enhancing Singapore's energy infrastructure with a focus on harnessing hydrogen technology. This development underscores Singapore's commitment to a greener and more sustainable energy landscape to support the country's economic growth and environmental goals.
