Italian gas grid operator Snam has announced a substantial investment of €14.5bn to adapt its infrastructure for the energy transition towards green fuels like hydrogen and CO₂. The investment, scheduled for the period between 2028 and 2032, aims to repurpose the existing gas network to support these eco-friendly alternatives. Snam's strategy includes emission reduction targets of 25% by 2027, 40% by 2030, and 50% by 2032, with a comprehensive road map towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The company's transition plan emphasizes the technical and economic feasibility of transforming its gas infrastructure while addressing concerns of potential asset obsolescence due to new LNG projects. By aligning with the Italian National Energy and Climate Plan and European industry standards, Snam sets a sustainable course for its operations up to 2040 and beyond. Snam's risk analysis indicates a secure business model with minimal asset stranding risk, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. The company has already seen notable reductions in CO₂ emissions and plans for further decreases, alongside significant reductions in methane emissions.
