Tamil Nadu is gearing up to establish itself as a prominent green hydrogen hub with a substantial investment of Rs 42,000 crore from four major global energy companies. This collaborative effort involves companies like Petronas-backed Amplus Ganges Solar, Sembcorp Industries’ Green Infra Renewable Energy, Acme Green Hydrogen and Chemicals, and ReNew Energy’s subsidiary ReNew E-Fuels. The initiative aims to position India as a key player in green hydrogen production, in line with the nation's goals of moving away from fossil fuels and reducing carbon emissions. The project will be located at VO Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, taking advantage of the region's abundant solar and wind energy resources. This strategic location makes it an ideal spot for green hydrogen production without carbon emissions. The first phase of the project is expected to attract investments amounting to Rs 41,860 crore and is planned to be operational by 2028. Green hydrogen is recognized as a crucial component in India's shift towards clean energy, offering a sustainable option for industries like steel, chemicals, and transportation. The investments in green hydrogen will greatly accelerate its adoption in challenging-to-decarbonize sectors, contributing to energy security in India. This venture aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets producing five million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, potentially transforming industries nationwide. The global collaboration involved in this investment is a significant step in scaling up green hydrogen production, reducing India's reliance on imported fossil fuels, and supporting global environmental objectives. By combining forces with international and Indian partners, this project will play a vital role in advancing India's transition to clean energy, generating employment opportunities and fostering sustainable economic growth in Tamil Nadu.
