TotalEnergies SE and Air Liquide SA have unveiled plans for a substantial joint venture worth €600 million to produce green hydrogen for Total's refinery in the Netherlands and its petrochemical plant in Belgium. The collaboration entails setting up a 250-megawatt electrolyzer, powered by wind energy, near the Zeeland refinery, and another 200-megawatt electrolyzer near Rotterdam to cater to Total's Antwerp facility. This initiative is part of Total's ongoing efforts to diminish emissions at its refineries by incorporating low-carbon hydrogen. The project near the Zeeland refinery is scheduled for commissioning in 2029, while the one serving the Antwerp plant is slated to commence operations by the end of 2027, pending a final investment decision. Total intends to supply the electrolyzers with power sourced from an offshore wind venture in the Netherlands. Simultaneously, Air Liquide is set to secure clean power from a Vattenfall wind farm off the Dutch coast. Air Liquide will leverage its established hydrogen pipeline network to extend services to additional clients in the Netherlands and Belgium. The comprehensive venture is expected to require an investment exceeding €1 billion and has the potential to mitigate annual emissions by up to 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide. The electrolyzer technologies for these projects will be sourced from Air Liquide's partnership with Siemens Energy AG.
