UK Niche Vehicle Network Advances Zero Emission Technologies with £2 Million Funding
Key Ideas
- The Niche Vehicle Network in the UK has awarded over £2 million to six pioneering niche vehicle technology projects, with more than £1 million coming from government funding.
- The funded projects aim to advance zero tailpipe emission vehicle technologies, including hydrogen storage solutions, electric drive and control units, low-floor delivery vehicles, and high-performance batteries.
- The initiatives focus on enhancing storage capacity, efficiency, and vehicle range while promoting innovation, reducing CO2 emissions, and contributing to the UK's transition to net zero in the automotive sector.
- The funding supports the development of omni-category lightweight e-motorcycles, low-floor delivery vehicles, battery electric powertrains, and high-performance batteries with integrated thermal management for niche vehicle applications.
The Niche Vehicle Network in the UK has allocated over £2 million to support six innovative niche vehicle technology projects, with a significant portion of funding sourced from the Department of Business and Trade and the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK. The Production Readiness and Proof of Concept Competitions funded by the NVN aim to propel zero tailpipe emission vehicle technologies forward in the UK's niche vehicle sector.
One of the funded projects, Carbon Threesixty's Hi-DEN Gen2 project, aims to develop a conformable hydrogen storage solution for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles in collaboration with other industry partners. Muon Tech is working on the VXM-35, an integrated electric drive and vehicle control unit for light vehicles and electric power take-off applications.
Other projects include the development of the Boped lightweight e-motorcycle, a low-floor delivery vehicle, an off-highway vehicle converted to a battery electric powertrain, and a high-performance battery prototype. These projects are crucial in advancing technology, reducing CO2 emissions, and expanding the UK's low-volume EV supply chain.
Scott Thompson and Josh Denne have praised the projects for their contribution to the UK automotive sector's shift towards net zero emissions. They highlighted the importance of these initiatives in enhancing technology readiness levels, fostering innovation, and creating opportunities for broader adoption in high-volume markets. The focus on low-carbon vehicle technologies underscores the commitment to achieving the UK's climate goals through innovative solutions in the automotive industry.
