U.S. Department of Energy Commits Billions to Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs
Key Ideas
  • Two Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs in the U.S. will receive up to $2.2 billion in federal award commitments to accelerate the commercial deployment of low-cost, clean hydrogen.
  • The Gulf Coast H2Hub and Midwest H2Hub are set to create thousands of direct jobs and support the decarbonization of various industries like steel, manufacturing, and heavy-duty transportation.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy's investment in clean hydrogen aims to reduce emissions in energy-intensive sectors, promote economic growth, and facilitate long-term decarbonization goals.
  • The H2Hubs program will drive private-sector investment in clean hydrogen and contribute to the expansion of renewable power while supporting the nation's decarbonization objectives.
The U.S. Department of Energy has announced a significant commitment to advance the development of clean hydrogen through the establishment of two Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs). These hubs, the Gulf Coast H2Hub and Midwest H2Hub, are pivotal components of the DOE's H2Hubs program, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The initiative aims to create a national network of clean hydrogen producers and consumers, along with necessary infrastructure, to facilitate the production, storage, delivery, and utilization of clean hydrogen. The Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub, led by HyVelocity, will produce clean hydrogen from water through electrolysis and natural gas with carbon capture and storage. It is expected to generate around 45,000 direct jobs and play a crucial role in reducing emissions in energy-intensive sectors. On the other hand, the Midwest Hydrogen Hub, spearheaded by the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen LLC (MachH2), will focus on decarbonizing industries like steel, manufacturing, and power generation across several states, creating approximately 12,000 direct jobs. The DOE's investment in these H2Hubs will be matched by the recipients, driving private-sector involvement in clean hydrogen projects. This initiative not only aims to reduce emissions and promote economic growth but also supports long-term decarbonization efforts. Clean hydrogen's versatility, including its use in heavy-duty transportation and as a form of long-duration energy storage for renewable power, underlines its potential to revolutionize energy systems and contribute to a more sustainable future.
