  • The investment in hydrogen technology aims to strengthen energy resilience, support communities, and advance Australia's transition to renewable energy sources.
The Victorian Government, led by Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio, unveiled the Neerim North mobile network renewable hydrogen back-up system to bolster energy resilience in Victoria during emergencies and power disruptions. The system, powered by 10-kilowatt renewable hydrogen generators, is designed to provide up to 72 hours of back-up power, helping to maintain mobile coverage even in the face of severe weather events. Minister D’Ambrosio emphasized the crucial role of renewable hydrogen in enhancing energy resilience and ensuring reliable and affordable power for communities, as outlined in Victoria's Gas Substitution Roadmap. This initiative is part of the $6.6 million Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund, with $1.1 million specifically allocated to the Telstra Hydrogen Fuel Cell Pilot project. This project has already deployed five hydrogen fuel cells in storm-affected areas like Coldstream, Kinglake, Christmas Hills, and Chum Creek, contributing to improved energy security during extreme weather conditions. Additionally, companies such as Volgren Australia, Viva Energy, Energys Australia, and Boundary Power are actively engaged in hydrogen pilot projects to explore the potential of renewable hydrogen in energy decarbonization and resilience building. Boundary Power recently achieved a milestone by commissioning Australia's first solar-renewable hydrogen standalone power system, marking significant progress in integrating renewable energy sources. Telstra is also conducting trials on renewable hydrogen to assess its role in decarbonizing energy supply and strengthening energy resilience. The investments and initiatives in hydrogen technology reflect a positive sentiment towards advancing energy resilience, supporting communities, and driving the transition to sustainable and renewable energy solutions in Australia.
