APEC member economies are working together to embrace clean and low-carbon hydrogen as a key element of their sustainable energy future. In a workshop hosted by APEC Peru 2024 in Lima, policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers shared best practices and discussed challenges and opportunities related to integrating hydrogen into the energy mix. The focus is on creating roadmaps with clear targets and market-driven indicators to scale up clean hydrogen production. Despite uncertainties about the future viability of clean hydrogen due to challenges like cost competitiveness and infrastructure development delays, experts remain optimistic that technological advancements and government support will drive the market forward. The session emphasized the need for harmonized regulatory frameworks and innovative financing mechanisms to facilitate the adoption of hydrogen technologies. Additionally, representatives from various APEC member economies provided insights on their hydrogen initiatives, underlining the importance of cross-border collaboration to achieve regional energy goals. The workshop also highlighted the significant role women play in the hydrogen and renewable energy sectors, emphasizing the need for their involvement in shaping policies and promoting sustainable practices. Ultimately, the workshop concluded with a call to action for APEC economies to continue collaborating on hydrogen initiatives, ensuring the region remains a leader in the global clean energy transition.
