Danish renewable energy investment firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has secured funding for the Murchison Green Hydrogen Project in Western Australia. The project has been awarded up to $814 million in production incentives for its 1,500 MW capacity, utilizing solar and wind generation to power hydrogen production and green ammonia conversion for export. The initiative, located 20 kilometers north of Kalbarri, is set to play a significant role in Australia's green hydrogen ambitions, with the first stage targeting to produce 900,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. CIP Partner Karsten Uhd Plauborg highlighted the importance of projects like Murchison Green Hydrogen in advancing decarbonization and achieving energy independence. The project's commitment to creating local jobs, supporting skills development, and benefiting local communities, including First Nations, has garnered appreciation from stakeholders. Australian Hydrogen Council CEO Dr Fiona Simon emphasized the crucial role of initiatives like Murchison in unlocking benefits such as new jobs, infrastructure development, and decarbonization in industrial sectors. The project funding, delivered by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), will be disbursed over 10 years to accelerate development. Additionally, the Government's engagement with First Nations representatives through the Renewable Hydrogen Engagement Fund aims to empower communities to benefit from renewable hydrogen opportunities.
