India has set out an ambitious plan to establish itself as a global hub for green hydrogen production, utilization, and export. With targets of $100 billion investment and 5 million metric tons production by 2030, the country aims to lead in the green hydrogen industry. Various initiatives under the National Green Hydrogen Mission focus on decarbonizing key sectors like refineries, fertilizers, and steel while also aiming for 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. Several projects have already been initiated by companies like Oil India Limited, NTPC, and Pune Municipal Corporation to promote green hydrogen across different sectors. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable sources, offers benefits such as emission reduction, energy security, job creation, and decarbonization of difficult sectors like heavy industry and aviation. Despite the positive outlook, challenges such as low production levels, energy inefficiency, slow adoption in sectors, economic sustainability, access to critical minerals, and safety concerns need to be addressed for the successful scaling of green hydrogen production in India. The rapid development of green hydrogen projects and the government's supportive policies indicate a promising future for India's green hydrogen industry, contributing to a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy transition.
