MAHLE Powertrain Expands Northampton Facility for Hydrogen Powertrain Testing
Key Ideas
  • MAHLE Powertrain is enhancing its Northampton facility to conduct hydrogen powertrain testing, supporting both light and heavy-duty applications.
  • The expansion includes upgraded engine dynamometers with a 900kW, 4,000Nm capacity for the growing demand in hydrogen powertrain development.
  • The facility adheres to BCGA guidance on hydrogen storage, features individual test cells with safety systems, and plans to convert diesel engines to hydrogen combustion.
  • MAHLE Powertrain responds to customer demand and aims to facilitate decarbonization in off-highway, heavy-duty, and marine sectors through rigorous hydrogen engine testing.
MAHLE Powertrain is expanding its Northampton facility to include a dedicated hydrogen powertrain testing capability. The facility will have the capacity to hold two tube-trailers on-site with rapid switch-over functionality to ensure a continuous hydrogen supply. Upgraded engine dynamometers will support the development and testing of hydrogen powertrains for both light and heavy-duty applications. The facility is already involved in hydrogen fuel cell system development and testing hydrogen-fueled vehicles. The company will also work on converting heavy-duty diesel engines to hydrogen combustion, avoiding wholesale replacements. Adhering to BCGA guidance, the facility ensures safe storage and handling of hydrogen. Each test cell features a safety system for monitoring potential gas escape. MAHLE Powertrain's experience in developing engines for renewable fuels like methanol complements its hydrogen powertrain initiatives. Director Simon Reader highlights the increasing interest in hydrogen combustion engines in sectors where electrification is not viable, and the expansion aims to meet the demand from customers. The facility's dedicated hydrogen supply will enable rigorous testing of heavy-duty engines to address decarbonization in various industries.
