Ohio Transit Authority Leading the Way to Clean Hydrogen Future
Key Ideas
  • Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) aims to transition its hydrogen-powered fleet to a cleaner and locally produced fuel source.
  • The partnership with energy company Enbridge and the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) plans to produce hydrogen on-site using solar power, reducing emissions.
  • Federal funding from the bipartisan infrastructure law and grants supports the $15 million project, expected to double SARTA's hydrogen supply and improve transit system resiliency.
  • While some express preference for electric or biodiesel buses, SARTA CEO Kirt Conrad sees the evolution of technology making clean hydrogen a viable and environmentally friendly option for the future.
The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) in Canton, Ohio, with one of the nation's largest hydrogen-powered transit fleets, is seeking to transition to a cleaner and locally produced fuel source. Currently, SARTA operates 22 hydrogen fuel-cell buses, emitting only water vapor and warm air as exhaust, reducing air pollution in the area. To address the carbon emissions associated with producing and transporting hydrogen, SARTA is partnering with energy company Enbridge and the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) to produce hydrogen on-site using solar power. The project, funded by federal sources, aims to install 1,000 solar panels on 10 acres of land to power an electrolysis facility that would produce around 1 ton of hydrogen per day. The federal funding supports about 70% of the $15 million project, with the goal of doubling SARTA's hydrogen supply and improving the transit system's resiliency. While some critics prefer electric or biodiesel buses for emission reductions, SARTA's CEO, Kirt Conrad, believes in the potential of clean hydrogen as an evolving technology. The project is expected to start on-site hydrogen production by 2028, enhancing the agency's sustainability and reducing emissions compared to current practices.
