Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has announced a plan to expedite the development of large power plants in the state by offering substantial tax breaks for projects that utilize hydrogen. The initiative aims to address the looming energy crisis in Pennsylvania, driven by the surge in electricity costs and the state's reliance on natural gas. Shapiro's proposal includes the establishment of the Pennsylvania Reliable Energy Siting and Electric Transition Board to streamline permitting for energy projects. He emphasized the need for immediate action to enhance Pennsylvania's energy infrastructure and attract significant investments. The tax credits under Shapiro's plan target projects involved in electricity generation and the production of hydrogen-based aviation fuel. These credits could amount to $100 million per year for power plants and up to $49 million annually for hydrogen fuel users. Additionally, an aviation fuel producer could qualify for tax credits of up to $15 million per year. The initiative is aligned with President Joe Biden's climate change agenda, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting renewable energy sources. While Shapiro's energy policy has faced criticism from Republican lawmakers, renewable energy advocates have welcomed the proposed measures. The plan also aims to stimulate demand for hydrogen through federally subsidized projects involving Pennsylvania's businesses and institutions. One of the projects seeking support is CNX Resources' proposal to build a $1.5 billion hydrogen facility at Pittsburgh International Airport.
