Sarawak is on the brink of making history in Malaysia by becoming the first state to implement hydrogen-specific legislation. The Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is designed to provide a legal framework to regulate hydrogen activities in the region. Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang highlighted the significance of this proposed amendment during a session in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly. This legislative change will allow Sarawak to oversee the production, import, and sourcing of hydrogen for its generation and storage needs. The new 'Part A' dedicated to hydrogen will be under the supervision of the Sarawak Ministry for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, emphasizing the state's focus on green energy and environmental protection. The existing provisions will fall under the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, ensuring a comprehensive regulatory approach.
