Scotland has recently published its first hydrogen sector export plan, aiming to establish the country as a significant producer and exporter of renewable hydrogen by 2030. Titled 'A Trading Nation: Realising Scotland’s Hydrogen Potential – A Plan for Exports,' the plan outlines the necessary actions to leverage the economic and net-zero opportunities presented by hydrogen. It emphasizes the growing market demand in the UK and Europe for hydrogen products and the need to attract investments in production, transport, and storage. The plan also focuses on developing domestic support chains, enhancing infrastructure for hydrogen export, and collaborating with international partners. Scotland could potentially produce 3.3 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2045, a substantial contribution to the country's energy demand. The plan aligns with the Green Industrial Strategy and the Hydrogen Action Plan to boost the growth of the hydrogen sector.
Acting Energy Secretary Gillian Martin unveiled the plan during a visit to Hydrasun, a Scottish company specializing in hydrogen refuellers. Martin highlighted hydrogen as a significant industrial opportunity for Scotland and stressed the importance of government, industry, and investor collaboration. Dr. Stuart Mitchell from Hydrasun praised the plan, underlining Scotland's leadership in the hydrogen economy and the country's potential to be a global leader in hydrogen exports. The Scottish government's support, particularly through agencies like Scottish Enterprise, has been vital in driving growth and innovation in the hydrogen sector. Collaboration across sectors and communities is seen as essential to fully realizing hydrogen's potential and positioning Scotland as an innovative and sustainable leader in the global hydrogen market.
