ACWA Power Co. Signs MoU for Green Hydrogen Project in Tunisia
Key Ideas
  • ACWA Power partners with Tunisian Ministry of Industry for a green hydrogen project exporting to the EU.
  • The project entails phases to produce 600,000 tons of green hydrogen annually using 12 GW of renewable energy.
  • Infrastructure, including water desalination plant and electrolysis devices, will support the project's implementation.
  • Tunisia's national strategy aims to export over six million tons of green hydrogen to the EU by 2050 via the 'South 2' hydrogen pipeline.
ACWA Power Co. has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy to explore a green hydrogen project in Tunisia. The project plans to produce nearly 600,000 tons of green hydrogen annually in three phases, with the intention to export it to the European Union. ACWA Power will be responsible for developing power generation units with a total capacity of 12 GW from renewable energy sources, along with storage systems and transmission lines. Additionally, the project includes the setup of a water desalination plant, electrolysis devices, and other infrastructure to facilitate the direct connection to the main pipeline. The initial phase of the project will involve installing renewable energy units with a capacity of 4 GW, an electrolysis capacity of 2 GW, and battery storage facilities to produce 200,000 tons of green hydrogen per year. The green hydrogen will be exported via the 'South 2' pipeline, a part of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity initiative, linking Tunisia with Italy, Austria, and Germany. This project aligns with Tunisia's strategy to export six million tons of green hydrogen to the EU by 2050.
