Advancing Green Hydrogen Innovation in Atlantic Canada
Key Ideas
  • Dalhousie University and NRC collaborate on a $500,000 project to develop alternative catalysts for green hydrogen production in Atlantic Canada.
  • The project aims to replace precious metals in electrolyzers with more abundant and cost-effective elements to reduce the cost of green hydrogen.
  • Artificial intelligence will be used to identify potential catalysts from scientific literature, which will then be synthesized and tested for performance and water-quality resilience.
  • Success in developing cheaper and water-resilient electrolyzers could boost the adoption of green hydrogen in the Atlantic region and create opportunities for local talent.
Researchers from Dalhousie University in Canada are working with the National Research Council on a project to advance green hydrogen production in Atlantic Canada. Led by Drs. Mita Dasog and Michael Freund, the project focuses on developing alternative catalysts to replace precious metals in electrolyzers, aiming to make green hydrogen more cost-effective. The project, funded mainly by the NRC's Materials for Clean Fuels Challenge program, will utilize artificial intelligence to identify potential catalysts from research papers. These catalysts will then be synthesized and tested for performance and water-resilience to improve the cost-competitiveness of green hydrogen. Collaboration with an industry partner in Newfoundland will further test the most promising catalysts. Dr. Dasog envisions a future with cheaper and water-resilient electrolyzers, reducing dependency on rare materials and driving the adoption of green hydrogen in the region. This project not only aims to advance green-hydrogen technologies but also to strengthen collaborations between Dalhousie and NRC labs while providing training opportunities for talent in the Atlantic provinces.
