JFE Steel Corporation, in collaboration with the Japan Hydrogen Association and Kyushu University, is embarking on a research project to study materials for high-pressure hydrogen pipelines in Japan. The consortium's proposal has been accepted by NEDO for implementation under a government-sponsored project aimed at developing technologies for a competitive hydrogen supply chain. The research will focus on assessing the safety and resilience of different pipe welds and materials, including UOE steel pipe and seamless steel pipe, in hydrogen environments and seismic conditions. By gathering data on fracture mechanisms and partnering with international research organizations, the project aims to contribute to the establishment of national safety standards for high-pressure hydrogen pipelines in Japan. Recognizing the significance of hydrogen as a clean energy source in achieving carbon neutrality, Japan is keen on advancing its hydrogen infrastructure.
