Advancing Steel Production with Green Hydrogen: India's National Mission Initiatives
Key Ideas
  • The Union government in India has sanctioned three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to utilize hydrogen in steel production, aiming for low-carbon iron and steel production.
  • These projects will demonstrate the safe operations of green hydrogen-based steel-making processes, evaluate their economic viability, and contribute to India becoming self-reliant in clean energy.
  • The pilot projects, led by different consortia, will have varying capacities ranging from 40 to 3200 tons-per-day and will receive a total financial support of Rs 347 crore from the Centre.
  • The overall mission, with an investment of Rs 19,744 crore until 2029-30, will play a crucial role in India's de-carbonization efforts, reducing fossil fuel dependence and positioning the country as a leader in green hydrogen technology.
The Union government of India has approved three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to explore the use of hydrogen in steel production. These projects aim to identify advanced technologies for utilizing green hydrogen in steelmaking, with the objectives of validating technical feasibility, ensuring safe operations, and assessing economic viability for low-carbon iron and steel production. The projects include producing Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) using 100% hydrogen, reducing coal/coke consumption in blast furnaces by utilizing hydrogen, and injecting hydrogen in vertical shaft based DRI making units. The projects, led by consortiums like Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd, will have different capacities ranging from 40 to 3200 tons-per-day. The total financial support from the Centre for these projects amounts to Rs 347 crore, with an expected commissioning timeline of the next three years. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023, with significant investment, aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy and lead the global clean energy transition. This mission will facilitate de-carbonization of the economy, reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a technology and market leader in green hydrogen.
