Algeria's Sonatrach group and Spain's Cepsa have initiated a joint project to produce green hydrogen and derivatives, highlighting collaboration between the two countries despite recent political tensions. The memorandum of understanding signed by the companies aims to contribute to decarbonization efforts and marks a significant step in the development of green energy. The project intends to explore the feasibility and profitability of an integrated system for green hydrogen production, including electrolysis plants powered by solar and wind energy, methanol, and green ammonia production facilities. The agreement also involves the construction of infrastructure for storage, transport, and commercial export of hydrogen to Spain. The announcement was made during the Africa & Mediterranean Energy & Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference, signaling a commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions in the region. Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines Mohammad Arkab highlighted the country's energy strategy, emphasizing the importance of natural gas in ensuring energy security and supporting the global energy transition.
