Azerbaijan's SOCAR and TES Partner to Explore Green Hydrogen-Based e-NG Project for European Export
Key Ideas
  • SOCAR and TES have signed an agreement to explore the development of a green hydrogen-based electric natural gas project in Azerbaijan for European export.
  • The e-NG project aims to leverage existing natural gas infrastructure using green hydrogen and captured CO2, providing a sustainable alternative for various industries.
  • TES plans to produce one million tonnes of e-NG per year by 2030, contributing to the energy transition and global decarbonisation efforts.
  • Electric natural gas is seen as a bridging solution in the energy transition, offering a circular and sustainable alternative to traditional natural gas for companies worldwide.
Azerbaijan's state-owned oil and gas firm SOCAR has partnered with Tree Energy Solutions (TES) to explore the development of a green hydrogen-based electric natural gas (e-NG) project in the country with an aim to export to Europe. The e-NG project, which involves combining green hydrogen and captured CO2 to create a chemically identical fuel to natural gas, is viewed as a sustainable solution that can utilize existing gas infrastructure. While specific project details were not disclosed, the partnership highlights Azerbaijan's strategic location for expanding e-NG production. TES plans to produce one million tonnes of e-NG annually by 2030 as part of its global ambitions. The concept of e-NG as a bridging solution in the energy transition is gaining traction, offering a practical way to extend the use of natural gas infrastructure while reducing carbon emissions. By utilizing green hydrogen and recycled CO2, e-NG can be integrated into various sectors such as power generation, heavy industry, transportation, and more. This circular and sustainable approach aligns with the goals of global decarbonisation efforts. With Japan setting targets for e-NG integration into its gas supply networks, the potential for e-NG to play a significant role in the energy transition is evident. TES, established in 2019, initially focused on green hydrogen projects and is now expanding its portfolio to include e-NG production, showcasing a commitment to cleaner energy solutions and environmental sustainability.
