BC Innovation Organizations Invest $9.2M in Cleantech and Life Sciences Projects
Key Ideas
  • BC Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) and Innovate BC are allocating $9.2 million to 18 projects in cleantech and life sciences, focusing on innovative solutions.
  • CICE is investing in projects to combat wildfires and develop climate technologies, while Innovate BC is funding projects in natural resources and applied sciences.
  • The funded projects range from wildfire tech, low-carbon hydrogen, and energy storage solutions to chia-based fat substitutes and AI-driven platforms for HPV testing.
  • This funding initiative aims to address pressing challenges, promote growth in key industries, and contribute to a prosperous economy in British Columbia.
Two British Columbia (BC) innovation organizations, the BC Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) and Innovate BC, are collectively providing $9.2 million in funding to various projects in the fields of cleantech and life sciences. CICE is allocating $7.7 million to support 13 projects that were selected through its wildfire tech projects call and open call for innovation. Among the recipients are companies like Ekona Power, Wildfire Robotics, and Ideon Technologies. The aim is to develop cutting-edge solutions to combat wildfires and advance technology to mitigate their impact, particularly in the face of climate change. CICE is also focusing on climate technologies by investing in seven BC companies working on low-carbon hydrogen, low-carbon fuels, and energy storage solutions. Innovate BC, on the other hand, is awarding $1.5 million to five BC projects in life sciences, food sciences, and cleantech, supported by the province's Ignite program. The funded projects range from developing advanced technologies for mining safety to creating innovative food products like chia-based fat substitutes. These investments not only target crucial issues faced by the province but also aim to drive growth and productivity in key industries. The projects funded through these initiatives have the potential to bring significant benefits to British Columbia's economy while fostering innovation and sustainability in the region.
