BC's H2 Gateway Initiative: Expanding Hydrogen Fuel Infrastructure for Zero-Emission Transportation
Key Ideas
  • BC and federal governments support HTEC's H2 Gateway project to establish up to 20 hydrogen refuelling stations, with a focus on heavy-duty vehicles.
  • New hydrogen electrolyzer facilities in Burnaby, Nanaimo, and Prince George will support the fuelling stations, enhancing hydrogen production capabilities.
  • The $900 million project, with government financial backing, aims to reduce pollution, create new jobs, and promote the use of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles for long-distance travel.
British Columbia is embarking on a significant initiative to diversify its zero-emission transportation sector beyond traditional battery-electric vehicles by investing in hydrogen fuel infrastructure. The H2 Gateway project, led by HTEC and supported by both provincial and federal governments, will establish up to 20 hydrogen refuelling stations across BC and Alberta. Of these, 14 stations will cater to heavy-duty vehicles, with the capacity to refuel up to 300 vehicles daily. To bolster this infrastructure, new hydrogen electrolyzer facilities will be constructed in key locations like Burnaby, Nanaimo, and Prince George. A crucial component of the project is the construction of a major hydrogen production facility in North Vancouver, which will liquefy vented by-product hydrogen from a local plant. This initiative, with a total cost of $900 million, receives financial support from the government through BC's Low Carbon Fuel Standard and a low-cost loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank. Colin Armstrong, the president and CEO of HTEC, emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships for such transformative projects, highlighting the critical role of governmental support. The project is not only aimed at reducing pollution by promoting clean fuels but also at fostering economic growth by creating job opportunities within the clean economy. The move towards hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles is expected to enable long-distance travel with short refuelling times, providing a promising alternative to traditional fuel sources. With the successful operation of Canada's first public hydrogen refuelling station in Vancouver in 2018, the H2 Gateway initiative signifies a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation sector in the region.
